The Magical Atmosphere Generator

Professional magicians can want more magic in their lives, too. More than you want your audiences to think of you as the magic-person, you want to feel like a Magician.

Successfully fooling audiences with tricks and getting freak-out reactions is satisfying. But to the performer, the material can become mechanical and repetitive. They might feel like a salesman-trickster, not a gateway to Wonder.

It is possible to perform magic tricks while feeling like you're doing real magic for people. Not just fooling people, not telling a story, not lying or merely amusing, but performing Magic. This feeling transcends daily life. It inspires creativity and imagination. Utilizing beautiful, rare, and robust tools to perform visual, direct magic is a powerful way to create a magical atmosphere wherever you perform.

This shop offers conjurers resources to connect with this magical ideal. The tools and information we produce are about becoming a Magician, and conveying the feeling to your audiences clearly and directly.

Who is Makoto?

On the hit television show, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, my featured routine was introduced by Alyson Hannigan as, "The Perfect Magic trick." Eric Evans, the legendary street magician and author of "The Secret Art of Magic," christened me, "the heir apparent to Cellini."

Starting at the age of 13, I have been studying magic through an ever growing library of books and DVDs.  My teenage years were spent diving down rabbit holes of specific effects, historical performers, and techniques. As a university student, I street performed with magic across the country in my free time, learning from a variety of master magicians. In turn, I impressed them with my growing skills in coinistry, wand magic, and the cups and balls. At university, I studied the psychology of magic, skepticism, and our senses; and on the streets, I applied what I learned through countless shows.

After a decade of performing magic on the streets, at fairs and festivals, corporate events, weddings, on TV, and at the Magic Castle, I wanted to get the best, most durable versions of the instruments of my trade. That desire led to learning about crafts, durable natural materials, and entrepreneurial skills needed to put projects together. Professional magicians who have seen my work wanted to join me in using high quality tools. This business took off from there.

Over the years, I have taught dozens of street magicians, as well as magicians from the Magic Castle. I have also lectured for SAM and IBM. Several of my students have gone on to perform at the Magic Castle and on Fool Us. One of my students is competing in FISM street magic 2025.

The Shop

Throughout my travels and performances I've come to value durability and beauty in my props. I had unattractive cheap cups when I started working. Once I was able to upgrade my rig and get some better busking gear, I got a set of pretty copper cups. During its second week on the pitch, a cup dropped and was maimed by the marble sidewalk of Hollywood Boulevard. Since then, I've bought heavy gauge "street" cups of various alloys and designs. Finding robust props for my show felt like progress. Along the way, I had used, broken, and damaged a range of magic wands,  from screw together pieces to fiber glass rods. I settled on single piece ironwood, made by hand. In my early twenties, I had them commissioned under my name. That craftsman retired and passed the business on to me.

Throughout my twenties I learned various complementary skill sets. I made a couple ballistic nylon gibecieres, including one Tom Frank used for many years at Burning Man. I have also learned to work with a variety of leathers, including tough and rare exotics that other leather workers shy away from. Long time Cups and Balls aficionado Jerry Foster has said they are the finest gibecieres he's ever seen.

Street magicians and top professionals around the world now use my wands, coin purses, and pouches. Living legend and Master Street Magician Jimmy Talksalot says "Makoto's Wand is not a trick wand, it is truly a Magic Wand. It is not gimmicked or gaffed, but it is designed secretly to compliment, aid, and anticipate every need, gesture, and movement of The Street Magician." Hollywood's Favorite Magician Jeff Black sports his pouches and wands at every possible occasion. Join them and get your luxury magic gear today.
